FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers about flying from the UK to Australia: flight times, airlines, baggage, visas and the best months to travel.
Still have a question?
Talk to our flight consultants about your trip to Australia. We'll answer it and check fares for your dates.
How long is the flight from the UK to Australia?
Qantas flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Perth in about 16 hours 45 minutes. To Sydney and Melbourne you change planes or stop once, usually in Singapore, and the journey takes about 22 to 23 hours including the stop. Until 31 January 2027, the Qantas flight from Perth back to London also stops in Singapore. Sydney and Melbourne are usually 11 hours ahead of the UK in the UK winter and 9 hours ahead in the UK summer, and Perth is 8 or 7 hours ahead.
Which airlines fly from the UK to Australia?
Qantas flies non-stop from Heathrow to Perth every day, and from Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore. British Airways flies from Heathrow to Sydney via Singapore every day. With one change of plane, Singapore Airlines flies via Singapore to Sydney, Melbourne and other cities, and Emirates flies via Dubai. Your consultant will show you the best options for your dates and budget.
When is the best time to fly to Australia?
Demand from the UK is usually lowest in May, June and September, so fares are often lower then. It is highest at Christmas, during Australia’s summer, and in the UK school summer holidays, so book 3 to 4 months ahead for those dates. Remember the seasons are reversed: December to February is summer in Australia and June to August is winter.
What is the baggage allowance on flights to Australia?
It depends on the airline and the fare. On British Airways, Economy Standard includes one 23kg bag and Economy Basic is hand baggage only. For other airlines, your consultant confirms the exact allowance before you pay, and it’s shown on your e-ticket. If you need extra luggage, tell us and we’ll look for a fare with a bigger allowance or price up extra bags.
Do I need a visa for Australia?
Yes. British citizens need a visa to visit Australia, and you must get it before you travel. Most visitors use an eVisitor (subclass 651), which has no application charge, or an Electronic Travel Authority (subclass 601), applied for in the official app, where a service fee may apply. Your passport must be valid for your whole stay. Rules can change, so check GOV.UK foreign travel advice before you book.
What can I take into Australia?
Australia has strict quarantine and customs rules. You must complete an Incoming Passenger Card and declare risky items such as food, animal products and wooden items, as well as any recent contact with farms, animals or wilderness areas. Breaking the rules can lead to a heavy fine, so if in doubt, declare it.
Which UK and Australia airports can I fly between?
Most flights leave from London Heathrow. Qantas flies non-stop to Perth (PER), and one-stop flights go to Sydney (SYD), Melbourne (MEL), Brisbane (BNE) and other cities. With Emirates you can also start from Manchester, Birmingham and other UK airports. Once in Australia, domestic flights go on to Cairns, Adelaide, the Gold Coast and beyond.
Can I fly into Sydney and home from Perth?
Yes. We can book one-way, return and multi-city tickets, so you can fly into Sydney and home from Perth, or the other way round. Whether you can change your dates, and the cost, depends on the fare rules, so tell us if you need flexibility and we’ll find a fare that allows changes.
